This is not a criticism as, obviously, not everyone buying the book lives where I do and, hopefully, some people will see it, buy it and use it when they come to the area on holiday and they could be based anywhere in the Peak District. There are 23 walks in all (along with three cycle trails) and I don’t feel remotely short-changed that there were 25 walks in the previous book: this is definitely a case of quality over quantity and, in any case, I can’t claim to have done all the walks, not least because some are long and some you have to go a long way to reach.įor example, in the first edition, one walk was at the top end of Saddleworth Moor (nearest town: Oldham) and this time there are two up that way. The new Peak District Pub Walks is much more than just a reprint. I’m pleased to say the first bit of added writing in the new copy is a signed greeting from Bob inside the front cover. When I have not been using the book, my eldest daughter, Sharon, and her family have borrowed it and we’ve often used it together. I thought it would be useful to establish such credentials as I have, I suppose, but I wanted to show Bob just how useful his work has been to us.

So it was with great pleasure that I headed up to the splendid Boat Inn at Cromford for the launch of a revised and updated version of the book and to meet the author, Bob Steel. Without a shadow of a doubt, the most used guidebook in the Crawford family over the last decade has been Camra’s Peak District Pub Walks.
